Watching Stuff With Our Brains Turned On

Midnight Texas, Season 2

Caught up with the tail end of the second season (and, so far, final) of Midnight, Texas. The show continues to bounce from “fun” to “good”… which is always nice. It has some eye-rolling bits, but so far it hasn’t really dipped too deeply into “bad” territory.

If you saw the first season, this one is a little more of the same with some different spices.

Of course there is a world-threatening big bad lurking in the shadows for most of the run.

Of course there’s a twist or three before and during the big final confrontation.

Of course there are some other totally weird (and sometimes darkly amusing) things that happen along the way.

There are also some solidly shocking moments, just to keep you on the edge of your seat a little.

This season adds in a couple of actors from my “will follow them anywhere” list: Nestor Carbonell (from so many things, including Bates Motel and Suddenly Susan) and Jaime Ray Newman (from Eastwick and Bates Motel). At the end of the run, we even get some Jaime Murray (from Defiance and Warehouse 13).

Since they’ve managed to stay fun–and at least a little dark–I’d happily watch a third season. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look that’s going to happen. At least not on NBC. I’m not sure this show is popular (or, really, good) enough to be saved by another outlet.

Stranger things have happened, though.

If you’re looking for something that’s full of monsters being good guys, character drama akin to True Blood (though nowhere near as intense), and a slight dark edge, you now have two short seasons of Midnight, Texas to turn to.
